Protect Your Identity!

So if you haven’t discovered online job searching, maybe now is a good time to check it out! Do keep in mind a few safety precautions when sharing information online. Although it can open up a whole lot of possibilities, make sure you don’t open yourself up as a target for scammers.

Personal information like your SIN number, birth date, address, and marital status can give scammers enough information to do their dirty deeds. So never divulge such information through email or by posting it online in your resume. Share those details once you have been hired.

Minimal contact information makes it harder for your identity to be stolen so consider the following:

Remove your standard “contact information”
1. Your home and/or work address(es)
2. Your home and/or work phone number(s)
3. Your business e-mail address (big NO-NO!)
4. Your personal e-mail address if it is associated with a detailed profile on you (as in AOL, etc.)

Replace the standard contact information with:
1. Your personal cell phone number, assuming that it is unlisted
2.Your personal e-mail address that is unconnected with either your home or your work, like one of the Web-based e-mail addresses (hotmail.com, Gmail, MSN, etc.).

Email Address Tips

You’d be surprised at some of the email addresses people actually put on their resumes. Things like “crazylady@gmail.com” or “lazybones@hotmail.com” definitely stand out to potential employers… and not in a good way.

A great way to avoid problems if you have an email address that is unprofessional is to create a free account specifically for job search. If you figure that you have outgrown your old email address, and that it really does not reflect what a great, mature and confident person you are; then change it! Make sure you pick an address that is easy to type in, is not offensive or strange, and simple. Just using your first and last name and a couple numbers works well. Being creative is fine, as long as it will not be read the wrong way.

And lastly, and most important, make sure you check your email account daily. Check it more often if you are applying for a lot of jobs and have been providing your email address as a way of contacting you. Nothing will get you crossed off the list faster than being hard to contact.
