I wanted to fill a need. Creston is my hometown, in the heart of the Kootenays. I wanted to provide a service with decadent desserts and confections that would showcase what our local producers have to offer.
Q. What are your products/services?
Handcrafted desserts and confections, such as Turkish Delight, French Macarons, Old-Fashioned Gingersnaps, Custom Layered Cakes, many dietary options and so much more! I believe that every single dessert I offer is a potential work of art, a gift for each guest, and so they are handcrafted with individual attention and care that respects the ingredients used.
Q. Where can we buy your products/services?
Directly from me via my phone, or my facebook page. I also have a limited selection of products available at the Fly in the Fibre. You can also come visit me at the Creston Farmers Market and Seasonal Craft Shows.
Q. Tell us about your business now compared to when you started.
When I first started I had no real connection with local buyers or suppliers. Today, I have a genuine connection with my very own clientele, and friendship with my suppliers. I now have a greater understanding for setting more realistic goals for myself, and I am able to be more organized in my daily operations.
Q. Do you have any business statistics you wish to share?
I was able to cater my very first wedding this summer! The momentum has continued from LEAP!, word of mouth, and social media to contribute to keeping me very busy. Facebook has become one of my main avenues for marketing; therefore, I have just reached over 600 likes and my Instagram page has been growing steadily as well and contributing to many new clients.
Q. Why did you join LEAP!?
I joined Leap because I wanted to have solid instruction and guidance on how to develop my business.
Q. What was the benefit of attending LEAP?
By attending LEAP, I was able to gain the confidence I needed based on actual facts. It was incredible to have the support and encouragement of my Peers all along the way.
Q. What awards and/or grants did you receive at the Barnraiser? And how did you spend your earnings?
I had the honour of receiving the People’s Choice Award of $600. I was able to purchase a brand new commercial mixer for my business with this money. I also received a generous gift certificate for Community Futures, a Membership to the Creston Chamber of Commerce, and I received an abundance of support and opportunities from all who attended!
Q. How did working with other LEAP! participants affect you as an entrepreneur and impact your business start-up?
Working with fellow entrepreneurs is essential! Their encouragement, support, and advice was very beneficial for me and still is today. We all learn from one other, especially just by listening! So often I found that the issues I was facing, could be solved just by listening to the similar issues that the others were dealing with and the tactics that they had found to solve them. Having a support group means that we can help each other. Even though all of our businesses are “different,” each of us can offer one another fresh perspectives and new ways of looking at things.
Q. Do you have any advice for someone starting out?
Sometimes it is easy to become overwhelmed, so do your best with what you have. Listen to everyone, consider and test theories, then apply what you learn to your business.
Get excited about how your business can (and will) evolve! This is YOUR passion, YOUR dream, get excited!
Q. What can the community do to support your business now?
Our wonderful community has already done SO much for me. I am continually blown away by the encouragement and support I receive. So I ask that the community would continue to support me and my business by considering me the next time they have an event and by recommending me to others.
